Contact Us Early Pregnancy Scan 6 weeks We at MUMS understand that the first few months of pregnancy can be quite an anxious time for many women with various concerns as to whether the pregnancy is developing normally or that it may result in a miscarriage or even an ectopic pregnancy. An Early Pregnancy Scan sometimes also called a Viability Scan or Dating Scan provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period LMP and not the date of conception. If you have had any bleeding or pain or any other symptoms then this scan will accurately confirm viability. Sometimes it is requested by a doctor or midwife to confirm that your pregnancy is healthy in this case your scan is often called a viability scan and to calculate the date when your baby is due usually referred to as a dating scan. It can also be performed to confirm the results of a pregnancy test or just to provide you with some reassurance that all is progressing as it should be. At MUMS we are very proud of our professional experienced and caring staff who will ensure that you receive the best care possible and give advice and support where appropriate. Early dating scan vs ultrasound

Having a scan in the first few months of pregnancy can be a thrilling experience. It’s amazing to see the little blob with a heartbeat that will soon become your baby. When will I have my first scan?

All of our scans are performed by qualified sonographers who have plenty experience in pregnancy scanning. We provide our dating scans from as early as 8 weeks. In a lot of cases, the earlier you have your dating scan, the most accurate it will be at estimating your baby’s due on: 5 Indescon Square, London, United Kingdom, E14 9DQ.

It is usually part of an assessment called combined first trimester screening. Combined first trimester screening Combined first trimester screening assesses the risk for your baby having certain chromosomal abnormalities trisomy 13, 18 and This testing combines the nuchal translucency ultrasound with specific blood tests. Nuchal translucency ultrasound alone can also provide this risk assessment, but it is not as accurate as combined first trimester screening.

Combined first trimester screening is a non-invasive way of assessing your risk, which means it does not involve putting needles into the placenta or amniotic sac, as happens with CVS and amniocentesis. This means that combined first trimester screening simply tells us if your risk is low or high. For example, it tells us whether your baby has a low risk of having trisomy 13, 18 or 21, or whether your baby has a high risk of having trisomy 13, 18 or This test gives us an indication of whether we should worry about your baby based on these results.

This means that combined first trimester screening will not give us a definitive answer. Chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis are invasive tests, involving putting needles into the placenta or amniotic sac, and they are associated with an increased risk of miscarriage.

For most mums-to-be, the first scan will be a dating scan at between 10 weeks and 13 weeks plus six days of pregnancy (NICE ). However, the timing of your first scan will also depend on how your pregnancy is going, and where you live. Your midwife may recommend an early scan at between six weeks and 10 weeks if you have experienced bleeding.

Dating and viability What is a dating scan? A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Dating scans also reveal other important information such as: Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures.

For transvaginal ultrasound you can have an empty bladder When is it recommended? Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period. For example if you do not know when the first day of your last period, or the likely day of conception was have had irregular periods have had an unusual cycle because you recently stopped the oral contraceptive pill, or you recently had a miscarriage, or you are breast-feeding had some implantation bleeding which can be been confused with your last period date What can be seen?

By 6 to 7 weeks gestation the fetus is clearly seen on trans-vaginal ultrasound and the heart beat can be seen at this early stage 90 to beats per minute under 6 to 7 weeks, then to beats per minute as the baby matures.
